On my previous post regarding the topic of lying I received some interesting feedback.
Some think that a lie free life would lead to a “mechanical robotic life without emotions…Some people justify that its okay to lie if it’s a life and death matter, or that it really depends on the neeat…others think its okay to lie if it does not harm any one…
When im talking about a “lie free life” im talking about our lives in general. How many of us have actually faced a life threatening event that forced us to lie? How many are in the army .. being forced to lie to save his comrades? Or have had a gun pointed at us ?hardly any I believe!
It is these “justifications” that we present to our selves, which have caused us all to be so indulged in itsy bitsy lying …that it has become second nature.
People lie when in trouble to save themselves from punishment or scolding, kids lie and make excuses when late or not able to do assignment.. We lie when we don’t want to meet or talk to people.. Shop keepers lie so they can sell their stuff, business men lie, politicians lie…… So who doesn’t lie?
So can we then say that it is not possible to live a lie free life??
Rasool saw was known as “Sadiq” The Truthful even before he was made the Nabi. The sahaba (ra) used to say that they did not know what a lie was! Meaning they never lied. So it is possible to stop lying. All we need to do is make a conscious effort and learn the importance of telling the truth.
Why we should not lie:
At the start of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah has informed us about three types of people and their characteristics:
Muttaqeen ( Those who save themselves from sin, hell and Allah’s anger)
• They believe on Ghaib (unseen)
• They perform Salat (Iqamat-as-salat)
• They spend out of what Allah has provided them( charity, zakat)
• They believe what Allah has revealed to Muhammad (saw)
• They believe what Allah revealed previously ( previous books)
• They believe in the hereafter
• Those who totally reject Allah’s revelation
(Quran 2: 06)
Munafaqeen – Hypocrites
And of mankind there are some who say “We believe in Allah and the Last Day” while infact they believe not. (2:8)
In their hearts is a disease and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. (2:10)
So from amongst the three types of people in the sight of Allah, there are some who claim to be Muslims (like we all claim to be Muslims) But, in the sight of Allah their eman is not accepted! So we need to be very careful lest we belong to the third category of people.
The main characteristic of such people, according to Quran is “lying”
A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. (2:10)
So this everyday lying of ours is actually making us all fall into the category of hypocrites! Whether we like it or not… whether we accept it or not our Islam is not valid. We will be in the deepest pit of hell because of our lying. Unless we decide to do something about it …
More reasons to not lie:
The following sayings of our holy Prophet Muhammad saw further clarify that lying is a grave sin.
Narated By ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr : The Prophet said, “Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.
1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner.”
(Sahih Bukhari Vol 001, Book 002, Hadith Number 033).
Abdullah reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Truth leads one to Paradise and virtue leads one to Paradise and the person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell, and the person tells a lie until he is recorded as a liar. (Muslim Book 032, Hadith Number 6307)
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the gravest lie in talk and do not be inquisitive about one another and do not spy upon one another and do not feel envy with the other, and nurse no malice, and nurse no aversion and hostility against one another. And be fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. (Muslim: Book 032, Hadith Number 6214)
“Lying is not good, whether in seriousness or joking” (Al Bayhaqiyy)
Malik related to me that he heard that Abdullah ibn Masud used to say, “The slave continues to lie and a black spot grows in his heart until all his heart becomes black. Then he is written, in Allah’s sight, among the liars.” (Malik’s Muwatta: Book 56: Hadith Number 018.)
Malik related to me that Safwan ibn Sulaym said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, ‘Can the momin be a coward?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He was asked, ‘Can the momin be a miser?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He was asked, ‘Can the momin be a liar?’ He said, ‘No.'” (Malik’s Muwatta: Book 056, Hadith Number 019)
“Lo! Allah guides not one who is a transgressor, a liar.(Quran 40:28)
They (hypocrites) will surely swear: We desire nothing except good. Allah bears witness that they verily are liars. (Quran 9: 43)
