Facts about Shab e Baraat

Common Knowledge About Shab e Baraat Vs FACTS

MISCONCEPTION :Shab e Baraat is a Special Night for prayers in Islam

FACT: There is no such thing as Shab e Baraat. Word Shab e Baraat never appears in the Quran or Hadith. Shab e Baraat is infact NOT an Arabic Word.

MISCONCEPTION: On this blessed night Allah Tala descends down to forgive people

FACT: Allah Tala descends down EVERY night to forgive the people who repent.

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 333:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “When it is the last third of the night, our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, descends every night to the heaven of the world and says, ‘Is there anyone who invokes Me (demand anything from Me), that I may respond to his invocation; Is there anyone who asks Me for something that I may give (it to) him; Is there anyone who asks My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’ “

MISCONCEPTION: This is the blessed night on which the taqdeer is decided. Who will live…who will die. Who will get how much rizq…

The following verses of the Quran are presented as evidence for this as this verse is talking about a blessed night on which everything is decreed..

Verity We Sent it down on a blessed night Verily,We are ever warning (3) There in is decreed every matter of ordainments(4) As a Command from Us. Verily, We are ever sending , (5)(As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is theAll-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6)

Surah Dukhaan Chapter 44 Verse 4

FACT: The verse is being misquoted.
This Verse is about a Night in Ramadan NOT Shab e Baraat. The verse is talking about revelation of
Quran on a blessed Night. Read the first 2 ayats of Surah Dukhaan

Hâ-Mîm 1) By the Manifest book that makes things clear, (2) We sent it down on a blessed night Verily, We are ever warning (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments[] (4) As a Command from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6)

Surah Dukhaan Chapter 44 Verse 1- 4

From the Quran we know that it was revealed in the month of Ramadan. Not Shabaan.

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an.

( Surah Al Baqarah. Chapter 2:185)

So which night is Surah Dukhaan talking about? The night of revelation of Quran in Ramadan is none other than Lailtul Qadr. On this night angels descend and taqdeer is decided.Read Surah Qadr

Lo!We revealed it on the Night of Power. (1) Ah,what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is! (2)
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. (3) The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees. (4)(The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn. (5)

And we all know that Laitul Qadr isa night which falls in the odd nights of last 10 days of Ramadan. So the Night of Decree is NOT 15th Shabaan but laitul Qadr.

Update:

MISCONCEPTION : Souls of the dead visit the earth and therefore one should go to cemeteries.

FACT: Once a person dies, if the soul is good, it is sent to IleeYeen and if it is bad it is sent down to Sijeyeen. There is a barzakh / a barried between the souls and this world and they can never ever return to this world or contact us.

Until, when death comes to one of them (those who join partners with Allâh), he says: “My Lord! Send me back, (99) “So that I may do good in that which I have left behind!” No! It is but a word that he speaks, and behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will be resurrected.(Surah Mominoon -100)

  1. Furthermore, Usaamah ibn Zayd (Radi Allah o Ta’ala Anho) said:

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha’baan.’ He said, ‘That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadaan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.’” (Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, see Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, page 425). According to a report narrated by Abu Dawood (no. 2076) she said: “The most beloved of months for the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to fast in was Sha’baan, and his fasting in Sha’baan was continuous with his fasting in Ramadaan.” – (Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani, see Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 2/461).

This comment is not contrary neither supporting but somewhat related, as it is about Shabaan.

  2. @ Mobin
AoA and JazakAllahu khair for sharing this hadith.

The entire month of Shabaan is blessed and the only authentic ibadat for this month is fasting, as you rightly mentioned the hadith.

Prophet Muhammad saw used to fast most of Shabaan. How ever celebrating Shab e Baraat and fasting ONLY on 15th Shabaan is an innovation and should be avoided.

  3. Salamalikum,

jazakAllahu khair brother Mobin for your comment. However, it will be interesting to see what the salaf had to say about this hadeeth. I see al-Albani has classified it as saheeh but did abu Dawood do takhreej of this hadith? I’ll have to look it up/ask. Still, as you said, this hadeeth doesn’t actually is in support of virtues of 15th of Shabaan.

sister Javeria, for full correct information: The name is Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baaz

  4. AoA

Dear Javeria Thanks for this piece. Jazakallah. However I would like to point one thing. You said:

Shab e Baraat is infact NOT an Arabic Word.

Shab is sure not an arabic word but bar’at is which means “disassociation”. Surah Tauba starts from this word:

    رَاءةٌ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ إِلَى الَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّم مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

    Quran(9:1)

  5. Sorry, I couldn’t copy it properly.

  6. AsalamuAlaykum,
    @ Ibrahim

JazakAllahu Khair for the correction. Waiting for the update on the status of hadith.

    @ Adnan.
JazakAllahu khair for the verse….and for bringing up another misconception about shab e baraat.

You may call it a similar word but the urdu word Baraat and the Arabic word “Bara at” have different pronunciations. There is a hamza in the arabic word..so there should be a slight pause)

No body calls the 15th Shabaan as Shab e Bara-at.. but it is called Shab e baraaat.. as in “Shadi ki Baraat”.

The Arabic Word Bara-at.. which is the starting of Surah Taubah means disassociation or “Bayyzari” or “La talluqi”. Bara-at is derived from the arabic root word ba-ra-hamza…which literally means “Kisee Makruuh kaam sai nijaat pana”

Surah Taubah is a very “strict” surah with black and white commands. It is the only Surah before which Bismillah is not recited because the Surah is declaring rules regarding the Mushriks who broke the treaty with the Muslims. This surah is a show of Allah’s anger on the Mushriks and the Ahle Kitab… hence no Bismillah coz no mercy of Allah.

Read Surah Taubah and its translation here:
    http://www.allahsquran.com/read/verses.php?ch=38

Despite this fact, if people still want to relate this with Shab e Baraat…then there should be a connection between 15th of Shabaan i.e. Shab e baraat and the bara-at.. i.e. diassociation from the pagans..

reading surah Taubah…it should be clear that there is no such connection between Shab e baraat and declaring disassociation/bayzari from the pagans…

    And Allah Knows Best

  7. Salamalikum,

I’m very sorry…as far as I know there is no doubt in what br. Mobin has written and what he quotes is sufficient. I had been reading something and then I read his comments while I was thinking of a similar issue (but not the same issue), and it didn’t pertain to this. It would be best if you took out this comment as well as the part of my last comment where I made the remark about the hadith so there is no doubt left inshaAllah. Please do so.

  8. n, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds.

can anyone explain me this? doesn’t that mean that our “Amaal”?

@javeria: for a long long time, I also considered “bar’at” an urdu wala baraat and i had believed that this is the reason people enjoy patakhay on 15th of shaban.

  9. Salaam, yeah lol…. amazing how an ordinary night evolved into what it is today….

i bet darwin would love this….

    1.nothing.
    2.decrees of faith
    3.fasting+prayers
    4.different fasting+prayers+tasbeehat
5.sharbat+halwa(chanay ki daal ka)(drink and sweet)
    6.qabrastaan(cementary)
    7.patakhay(crackers)
