Where did the Universe Come From? Part II

The Big Bang theory was totally rejected at first. But those who supported it had predicted that the ignition
of the Big Bang would have left behind a sort of ‘hot flash’ of radiation.

If a big black wood stove produces heat that you can feel, then in a similar manner, the Big Bang should
produce its own kind of heat that would echo throughout the universe.

In 1965, without looking for it, two physicists at Bell Labs in New Jersey found it.  At first, Arno Penzias
and Robert Wilson were bothered because, while trying to refine the world’s most sensitive radio antenna,
they couldn’t eliminate a bothersome source of noise. They picked up this noise everywhere they pointed the
antenna.

At first they thought it was bird droppings.  The antenna was so sensitive it could pick up the heat of bird droppings (which certainly are warm when they’re brand new) but even after cleaning it off, they still picked up this noise.

This noise had actually been predicted in detail by other astronomers, and after a year of checking and re-checking the data, they arrived at a conclusion: This crazy Big Bang theory really was correct.

In an interview, Penzias was asked why there was so much resistance to the Big Bang theory.

He said, “Most physicists would rather attempt to describe the universe in ways which require no explanation.
And since science can’t *explain* anything – it can only *describe* things – that’s perfectly sensible.  If you
have a universe which has always been there, you don’t explain it, right?

“Somebody asks you, ‘How come all the secretaries in your company are women?’ You can say, ‘Well, it’s
always been that way.’  That’s a way of not having  to explain it.  So in the same way, theories which
don’t require explanation tend to be the ones accepted by science, which is perfectly acceptable and the best way to make science work.”

But on the older theory that the universe was eternal, he explains: “It turned out to be so ugly that people
dismissed it.  What we find – the simplest theory – is a creation out of nothing, the appearance out of nothing
of the universe.”

Penzias and his partner, Robert Wilson, won the Nobel Prize for their discovery of this radiation.  The Big
Bang theory is now one of the most thoroughly validated theories in all of science.

Robert Wilson was asked by journalist Fred Heeren if the Big Bang indicated a creator.

Wilson said, “Certainly there was something that set it all off.  Certainly, if you are religious, I can’t think of a better theory of the origin of the universe to match with Genesis.”

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s installment: “Why the Big Bang was the most precisely planned event in all of history.”

Scientific Miracle of the Quran: Big Bang mentioned in the Quran?

Where did the Universe Come From?

100 years ago, Albert Einstein published three papers that rocked the world.  These papers proved the existence of the atom, introduced the theory of relativity, and described quantum mechanics. Pretty good debut for a 26 year old scientist, huh?

His equations for relativity indicated that the universe was expanding.  This bothered him, because if it was expanding, it must have had a beginning and a beginner. Since neither of these appealed to him, Einstein introduced
a ‘fudge factor’ that ensured a ‘steady state’ universe, one that had no beginning or end.

But in 1929, Edwin Hubble showed that the furthest galaxies were fleeing away from each other, just as the  Big Bang model predicted.  So in 1931, Einstein embraced what would later be known as the Big Bang theory, saying,
“This is the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I have ever listened.”  He referred to the ‘fudge factor’ to achieve a steady-state universe as the biggest blunder of his career.

As I’ll explain during the next couple of days, Einstein’s theories have been thoroughly proved and
verified by experiments and measurements.  But there’s an even more important implication of Einstein’s discovery.
Not only does the universe have a beginning, but time itself, our own dimension of cause and effect, began
with the Big Bang.

That’s right — time itself does not exist before then.  The very line of time begins with that creation event.  Matter, energy, time and space were created in an instant by an intelligence outside of space and time.
About this intelligence, Albert Einstein wrote in his book “The World As I See It” that the harmony of natural law “Reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting
of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.”*

He went on to write, “Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced
that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe–a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.”*

Pretty significant statement, wouldn’t you say?

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s installment:  “Bird Droppings on my Telescope.”

Respectfully Submitted,

Perry Marshall

The Most Concise Definition of God (Allah in Arabic)“Say: He is Allah,
The One and Only.
“Allah, the Eternal, Absolute.
“He begets not, nor is He begotten.
And there is none like unto Him.”
[Al-Qur’an 112:1-4]

The word ‘Assamad’ is difficult to translate. It means ‘absolute existence’, which can be attributed only to Allah (swt), all other existence being temporal or conditional. It also means that Allah (swt) is not dependent on any person or thing, but all persons and things are dependent on Him.

Surah Ikhlas – the touchstone of theology:Surah Ikhlas (Chapter 112) of the Glorious Qur’an, is the touchstone of theology. ‘Theo’ in Greek means God and ‘logy’ means study. Thus Theology means study of God and to Muslims this four line definition of Almighty God serves as the touchstone of the study of God. Any candidate to divinity must be subjected to this ‘acid test’. Since the attributes of Allah given in this chapter are unique, false gods and pretenders to divinity can be easily dismissed using these verses.

The Smiling Sky

Two planets Venus and Jupiter were at conjunction and  mimicked a “double star” and were only 2 degrees apart and the crescent moon below them gave the appearance of a smiling face on 1st Dec, 08…a beautiful sight indeed.

“This week’s planet conjunction marks the second time this year that Venus and Jupiter have mimicked a brilliant “double star” in our sky. Back on February 1st, they appeared together in the eastern sky before dawn. At that time they nestled even closer together — only ½° apart.

The last time these two planets were paired in the evening sky and easily seen was September 2005, when they appeared about 1½° apart. They won’t be this close together and well placed for evening viewing again until May 2013 (1° apart).”

27th August 2 Moons : Myths Vs Facts

Myth : On 27th of August this year there will be two Moons in the sky at night.

Fact: This is NOT TRUE.

The Myth seems to have generated due to a HUGE misunderstanding about an astronomical event that occurred in 2003. Planet Mars came very close to Earth and was visible with the naked eye as a bright star and in the telescope when magnified looked as big as the Moon. As reported in Sky and Telescope:

August 27th” is actually August 27, 2003. Mars did make a historically close pass by Earth at that time, and when magnified 75 times in a telescope, it looked (IN THE TELESCOPE) the size the Moon looks to the unaided eye.”

Some people obviously misunderstood this and thought that Mars will be as big as the moon and thus there will be two moons in the sky! Mars no matter how close it comes to Earth can NEVER EVER appear like the moon. Since the year 2003 the emails and smses have been circulation to view the historical astronomical event of two moons in the sky!

So Please make it very clear that there will NOT be two moons in the sky on 27th August this year or any other year. Mars does pass very close to Earth in thousands of years but no matter what, it can never be as big as the Moon in the sky!

Myth:The last sign of Qayamat (Day of Judegement) is that there will be two moons in the sky and BBC has predicted that on 27th Aug,07 there will be two moons in the sky and this is time when Imam Mehdi will arrive. It is in the Quran that after this last sign, the repentance will not be accepted.

Fact: THIS IS NOT TRUE AT ALL

The last sign of Qayamat (Day of Judgement) is NOT 2 Moons. There never is any such sign. No 2 Moon sign has been mentioned in the Quran or the hadith.

As I mentioned in the previous point, the Two Moon myth came into existence in the year 2003 due to a huge misunderstanding regarding a historical close pass of Mars from Earth.

The real last sign of the Day of Judegement is that Sun will rise from west on Earth which is mentioned in the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (saw)

I hope this clears up the huge confusion regarding the Two Moons on 27th August. Please stop forwarding this hoax if you receive it in your email or sms. It is a sin to spread news and rumors without verifying it first! Start spreading the truth about the hoax now.

Praying aboard a Space Shuttle

There is no excuse for missing the 5 daily prayers…not even in Space… read this wonderful article about a Muslim Astronaut and how he will be offering his prayers and celebrating Eid in Space.

The average astronaut has plenty to keep him busy. But when the first Malaysian man in space blasts off today from Kazakhstan, the Muslim doctor will have whole new layer of concerns dictated by the Koran. For instance, how will Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 35, pray towards Mecca when orbiting the earth at 17,000mph? In the closing days of the Muslim month of Ramadan, how will he observe the fast between sunrise and sunset?

Luckily, Malaysia’s Islamic scholars spent a whole year finding solutions to these and other ticklish problems as Mr Muszaphar prepared for his nine-day trip to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. He is not the first Muslim in space. That distinction went to Prince Sultan bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, who in 1985 flew on the US shuttle Discovery. Then last year, Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian American, became a space tourist. However, they were both left to decide for themselves how to meet their religious obligations.

Although Muslim Malaysians believe that Islamic rites should be rigorously observed at all times, the doctor and part-time model, chosen from 10,000 applicants, has been given a certain latitude during the flight.

The Islamic scholars’ rulings so fascinated Malaysians – bursting with pride over the mission in the country’s fiftieth year of independence – that newspapers published supplements detailing their edicts.

The astronaut will take the Baikonur launch point as his reference for his five-times daily prayers, ordinarily dictated by sunset and sunrise. Otherwise, with 16 orbits each day, a devout Muslim would be obliged to pray 80 times every 24 hours.

Holding the appropriate prayer position could prove difficult in zero gravity. But the scholars said that this – and praying towards Mecca – need only be performed “according to the capability of the astronaut”.

Ritual ablutions were also an issue due to the shortage of water, but Mr Muszaphar will use a wet towel to achieve the desired effect.

He was given permission to save his Ramadan fasting for his return home, though he said he wished to try. With Eid and the end of the holy month falling in Malaysia on Saturday, a few days into the mission, he has taken special celebratory food to share with his crewmates, Russian cosmonaut Yury Malenchenk and American Peggy Whitson.

“Being a Muslim going to space is a big responsibility for me, not only before the Malaysian people but all Muslims,” he said. “To be close to God’s creation, I will feel more spiritual and I do hope to come back and share all my feelings with other Muslims all over the world.”

27th August – 2 Moon Hoax

Why is it that when some information falls into hands of Muslims it gets twisted and turned and mixed and exaggerated and then propagated as facts without any basis or truth or verification..

The 2 Moon phenomenon which is suppose to happen tomorrow night, which i exposed here – that it was nothing but a huge misunderstanding and twisting of facts has taken a new turn as it was fwed from Muslim to Muslims and i was recently asked to verify the following event.

The last sign of Qayamat (Day of Judegement) is that there will be two moons in the sky and BBC has predicted that on 27th Aug,07 there will be two moons in the sky and this is time when Imam Mehdi will arrive. It is in the Quran that after this last sign, the repentance will not be accepted.

Sadly great “Lies” have been attributed to Allah. The last sign of Qayamat is NOT 2 Moons. There never is any such sign. This “sign” has just recently been concocted to sensationalize the event which will never happen.. just to scare people. The real last sign of the Day of Judegement is that Sun will rise from west on Earth, which, believe it or has another hoax attached to it.

It seems that this 2 Moon hoax got mixed up with this last sign of qayamat hoax which i wrote about here which said that sun will rise from west on mars and therefore sun will rise from west on earth too. So people twisted the phenomenon of retrograde to prove this hadith.

It is shameful that we muslims twist FACTS of Science to prove something..

This also sadly shows the ignorance of Muslims that what ever is propagated is readily accepted by them as facts and as their religion and then propagated futher! How pathetic and how shameful.

The ignorant Muslims are applying the same strategy to their Ibadaat and blindly following each other, without any verification or own research. Some good examples of this is the celebration of Milad un Nabi, celebration of ShabeBaraat, celebration of ShabeMairaj etc. All these are bidaat and have no authenticiy.. just like this Moon Hoax.

We should all make dua to Allah to show us the Truth as Truth. This one of my favourite duas..

Dua 1 for seeing truth

The Pathetic State of KU’s Observatory!

KARACHI: Observatory low on govt’s list of priorities

By Meera Jamal
KARACHI, June 24: After three decades of looking at the heavenly bodies, the progress of the observatory at the University of Karachi remains far from meteoric. Those at the helm of affairs are at best cynical about its very existence and purpose, dashing all hopes of the aspiring astronauts.“Paying attention to space sciences will pay off little in the long run. Had the government paid due attention to it when Suparco launched Rehbar Awwal, things would have certainly been in a better state,” says the KU vice-chancellor, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, about the Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA).

ISPA, however, is about 12 years old and stands majestically atop a hill and surprisingly, was built to last. It can resist all seismological challenges as its pillars go 15-foot deep into the ground. The telescope has a motor that keeps pace with the movement of the earth making any object under view always visible without any readjustments.

Despite such credentials, the observatory faces brutal neglect on part of the authorities concerned that can be gauged through the fact that there is just one permanent faculty member who is also the director of the institute with only five visiting professors.

Dr Pirzada seems to stand by the disregard and maintains that even if the institute is improved, it will make little difference. “The world has progressed so much that it will take ages before the country is able to catch up,” he says.

However, the science fraternity remains perturbed at the unmotivated performance of the students of astronomy both at the KU and at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science, and Technology (FUAAST) that offer astronomy as a subject. The latter also has a telescope since 2004 but it has not seen the light of day as the university does not have an observatory to house it.

The High Education Commission has also arranged an Uzbek astronomer Salakhutin Nuritdinov for the FUUAST but this was not a choice for the University of Karachi.

However, ISPA Director Shahid Qureshi tries to defend the administration. “They really cannot do much about it. We have very few experts in space sciences and astronomy who can convince and change the general perception about astronomy. And even fewer if it comes to making it alluring for the policy-makers,” explains Qureshi.

The director voices another reason for apathy amongst students. “Their poor educational backgrounds hamper their curiosity,” he says. However, he concedes that the government has not done much for this particular area of study.

Rahmatullah Jilani, general manager, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), believes that the government is not responsible for the indifference towards this field but the students actually lack the aptitude and initiative.

“We keep visiting institutions to find some bright students who are interested in the subject. But the youth opt for courses that can bag lucrative jobs,” he says.

Jillani admits that Suparco was immensely disillusioned in the 1980s when it sent some students abroad on scholarships but they never returned. He also mentions that the government has not been supportive to students who sought financial assistance for research projects. “Suparco continues to offer training courses but has not received an outstanding response,” he says.

The students harbour an entirely different set of issues. “If we have facilities to collect the required data on our own and not have to obtain it from the Suparco and the meteorological department, we will be more efficient in our work, and it will keep our interest in the research alive,” says a student of the department.

Students also attribute their lack of interest to the fact that their schools did little to generate curiosity.

“Do our schools ever take students to the planetarium, Suparco or the meteorological department? Besides, the poverty ratio in our country forces people to opt for subjects that promise high-income jobs,” says another student.

The recent Lunar eclipse was SubhanAllah beautiful and amazing, Though it seemed a bit scary with the mysterious shadows lurking on the other wise bright lunar surface. Since it was a slow process, i was a bit bored so swiveled my scope in the direction of Saturn to view it again. Never does it cease to amaze me!

Then I noted something else.. a very bright star mid way up the horizon near the south west..and im thinking… hmmmm looks like Venus.. but couldn’t possibly be Venus.. Venus is visible in the evenings these days… couldn’t be Saturn.. I just viewed it… couldnt be a star as was not twinkling….could it be Jupiter? Have I missed it in the sky chart?

Then I swiveled my scope up to it and a few seconds later I was jumping with joy! Had any seen me.. standing alone in the middle of the night on the roof top…they would have thought “what a Lunatic!” especially with the Lunar eclipse going on! Heheheh

Jupiter is just simply breath taking! Thought it appears quite small in my scope and colorless.. I could still make out the two dark bands around it and its four moons were clearly visible bright and shiny…all Magnificently lined up. What a view! SubhanAllah!
But I wish I had a bigger scope… like a 10 inch one or atleast a 6… the details of the surface can not be seen and it doesn’t look like as it appears in magazines and websites! Sight! On top of that the viewing conditions in Karachi are terrible with so much light pollution its impossible to see the north star! Serious…. i was able to find it only when there was a major power failure and all street lights n the creek city lights were off…

I used 10mm and 25mm eye pieces with Barlow.

Another interesting event of the night was the occultation of a star by the eclipsed moon.. this is the first time iv seen any occultation… was wonderful!

There is a solar eclipse coming up on the 19th. I don’t have a solar filter…so dunoo if I would be able to view it or not.. Unless I get hold of some solar filters…

I will soon Inshallah upload some pics taken by two ameteur astronomers from Karachi. Unfortunatley due to the current blog ban in Pakistan, i cant access wordpress from either world call or supernet… and the proxy server is not leting me upload the pics. Il upload them as soon as im able to Inshallah.

Praying During Eclipse
It is a sunnah to pray nafil when there is a solar or lunar eclipse
Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 18 :: Hadith 170

Narrated Abu Bakra:
In the life-time of the Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) the sun eclipsed and he went out dragging his clothes till he reached the Mosque. The people gathered around him and he led them and offered two Rakat. When the sun (eclipse) cleared, he said, “The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse because of the death of someone, and so when an eclipse occurs, pray and invoke Allah till the eclipse is over.” It happened that a son of the Prophet called Ibrahim died on that day and the people were talking about that (saying that the eclipse was caused by his death).

Astrology Vs Astronomy

"The HUman race has always wanted to control the future,or at least to predict what will happen. That is why astrology is so popular.Astrology claims that events on earth are related to the motions of the planets across the sky. This is a scientifically testable hypothesis, or would be if astrologers stuck their neck out and made definite predictions that could be tested. However wisely enough, they make their forecasts so vage that they can apply to any outcome. Statements such as 'Personal Relations may become intense' or you will have a financially rewarding opportunity' can never be proved wrong.

But the real reason most scientists dont belive in astrology is not scientific evidence or the lack of it but because it is not consistent with other theories that have been tested by experiment. When Copernicus and Galileo discovered that the planets orbit the sun rather than the earth and Newton  discovered the laws that govern their motion, astrology became extremely implausable  Why should the positions of other planets against the background sky as seen from Earth have any corelations with the macromolecules on a minor planet that call themselves intelligent life? Yet this is what astrology would have us believe."(Hawking,2001)
